The professor is a very nice and understanding. However, there is a lot of content he has planned for each class, so the class may feel rushed. This course is reading heavy. The readings ranged from 45 to 100 pages each class. I found some of the content interesting, but most of the readings (in my opinion) were dense and too long. Because most of the readings are difficult, I would highly recommend attending the lecture. The professor also takes attendance, so your participation grade may tank if you don't attend. The lectures are informative, and taking good lecture notes will definitely help you when it comes time to write the midterm and final. There is a lot of writing for a class that doesn't count as a second writing requirement. I ended up writing 30 pages; however, the instructor gives you enough time to complete the assignments. The professor is a lenient grader. He may seem intimidating; however, if you go to him for help, he will try his best to accommodate you. I would recommend this course if your course load is light, and you're genuinely interested in the subject. This class is not and easy class you can BS through. I finished the class with an A-.
This class was interesting, but had a lot of reading due each class. Sometimes the readings are quite dense or boring and hard to get through. In a way, you are tested on the readings through a take-home essay midterm and final and in class through participation questions. There are easy in-class worksheets you can do with other students. At the end of the class, you have a 10-page paper due on a given era and a 10-minute in-class presentation on the same subject. The professor makes jokes but has high expectations, which can make him come off a bit serious or stern at times. Overall, I'd say you get out of this class what you put into it. I didn't do most of the readings and got a B.
