This is a wonderful class! Take it if you can. Very interesting readings, thoughtful discussions, and fun writing assignments. There are weekly writing assignments and two papers, but Prof. Shaman is very flexible and willing to let you write about what interests you. He cares a lot about the class and the students in it, and would actually restructure his readings and assignments based on our interests. He leads great discussions and is incredibly passionate! In short, a learned a ton and left every class smiling.
This is an incredible course. Shaman is a fantastic guy, super nice, super smart, funny, very welcoming. I enjoyed going to each and every class (which was outside pretty much every time, weather permitting). He really listens to students and will talk about what you want to talk about. He will certainly encourage you to talk more on something. The things talked about in class may stem from one person's comment about something, and it develops based on the readings. Sometimes it's a bit hard to follow, but I think each class is a great thought experiment to have you thinking about something else in a different way. It's fantastic.
In terms of work, there are a few readings with annotations (nothing crazy, very light) before class each day and then 2 process journals each week. These prompts are about 300 words (more or less), but are really fun to write. The prompts are so innovative and you are free to write about pretty much anything related to nature. Most people choose to write about their lives and stories, and reading people's work in the canvas discussion board was always fun. You weren't forced to reply to others, which was good.
There's two major papers, about 20 pages in total. It seems a bit daunting, but it ends up not being too hard to write. You will have a meeting with Shaman and it's fantastic. He reads your paper like 4 times, makes pages and pages of notes. He listens and really tries to help you expand your writing. It's great. I got an A in this course.
My writing felt really expanded after the year, and I saw the environment and the world in a new way. It was fantastic. I would highly recommend this course to anyone, especially for a second writing requirement.
