do not take this class. engagements classes are supposed to be seminar-based, ie discussion with other classmates. this was a lecture class, ie Coach talking about stuff for 75 minutes straight. it is hard to follow his lectures so I didn't learn anything in this class. in his own words (from the syllabus) As are given to students who go above and beyond and Bs signify "good work" so he is a tough grader. the majority of our grade is essays, but he doesn't have a rubric for them.
Professor Bennett is a very knowledgeable guy and is truly passionate about his material. The issue is he isn't engaging and he likes to ramble without making clear connections. Engagements are generally supposed to be engaging courses that are not usually the most difficult to achieve an A in. Bennett's class is the hardest engagement at UVA. Word of advice: DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. There are so many other engagement classes that are more interesting and much less tedious. The essays you have to write are based on fairly simply subjects but the assigned readings/movies are the most boring assignments I have ever had to deal with.
This class could have been very interesting with a decent teacher. Proffesor Bennet is just not the right fit. He doesn't know how to use technology well and rambles in class constantly. He asks rhetorical questions that he is looking for a specific answer and pretty much yells if you didn't get it. Engagement classes are not supposed to be taught like high-level classes you take for you major and that's what he does.
I took this class online and it was not engaging at all. Although professor Bennett is very knowledgeable, he is prone to lecture profusely. Engagement courses are meant to be more discussion based, but he likes to talk about these topics. It can be hard as well to follow where he's going with things.
The readings are tough and are very time consuming. The topics were interesting, and the way of thinking that he introduces you to is cavalier and somewhat innovative. Makes you rethink what you would consider a "revolution".
There were 3 essays, and 1 group report write up. They weren't particularly hard, but we had no way of grasping what he expected. One of them was based on a short play you had to read. The second was on the silent film, "Battleship Potemkin" (I recommend watching it in at least 1.5x speed). The third was on the American Revolution. This class is way too much work in my opinion.

Coach (that's what we are to call him) is the smartest man I've ever met in my life. Seriously. His thought process in this class just blows your mind. I personally took a lot away from this short course and I felt that it changed my thought processes for the better. This class is what academia SHOULD be- thought invoking, compelling, and challenging. The course work was simple. A few 300-500 word essays, some personal statements, but it was mostly just doing a few readings before each class. We also had one group project. The class is heavily discussion based so come prepared to contribute! Discussion is apart of the final grade. The discussions tend to be a bit challenging. Coach gets carried away in his deep philosophical points and personally some days my brain couldn't handle all the information he was putting down. Other than that this class is interesting, simple, and fair! Coach is a great guy. You should definitely consider this class for an EGMT.
