I took his "You Are Who You Meet" engagement and honestly really enjoyed my time in it. Prof Bernard is also super kind and very refreshing to talk to. There are group annotations you need to complete weekly but you can just write a couple sentences and get full credit. Most of your grade comes from the writing journal assignments, which also aren't very difficult and just exist for you to reflect on the class discussion. The final project was producing a short podcast episode as a group of three, which I thought was very fun but might not be as enjoyable if you don't care for learning to use audio equipment (we were taught how to use the Clemons sound booths). Also I took this fall '24 but there was no option for that.
Overall, pretty easy engagement and great professor. #tCFF24
Interesting class topic, but bad execution. Prof Bernard is very knowledgable, but it just doesn't mesh well with students who have zero interest in (mostly) old white male authors. "The Ethics of Decadence" sounds like a cool class, but honestly seems like a 2000-3000 level 3-4 credit class with the content and amount of work he has us do. There's 2-3 hours of work to do before EVERY class, and then a 1 page writing assignment you have to do over the weekend. There are only a few people that even speak up during class, but he won't make you speak up if you don't want to. Group discussion time is nice, but the class passes by SO slowly, and mine is all the way out in Bond which is quite a hike from my dorm. Prof Bernard is very kind and understanding though, so if you have no other options, you can definitely get through this class. Grades are based on reading annotations (literally like size 10 font, single spaced, 30 page readings from 100+ years ago...) through Hypothes.is, weekly (weekend) 1 page responses, and a final debate project. Keep in mind the workload of this class and location if you sign up, and be prepared to be really confused.
