Matt Elia's course is likely one of the most difficult engagement courses at the University, with some of the most work. For each class you are expected to read 30-50 pages of extremely dense philosophical or historical reading and write a reflection on it, in the form of a question. Every week on Friday there is also a handwritten journal entry due of at least three pages, with genuine reflections that tie together the reading with your life. This being said, the course material is interesting, and I got something out of it, although Elia could be faulted for being a bit one sided in his teaching. The grading is not too harsh however, so the work you do each week is not as crushing. I would honestly recommend this course only if you are genuinely interested in the content, enough so to spend hours each week working on it for a gen ed requirement. #tCFfall2021
Elia is the nicest professor you will meet. You can tell he is passionate about the topic but also really considers his student's mental health. He creates a welcoming environment, and I was always excited for class. Everyone can gain something from this class and I 100% recommend taking it. The readings could be a bit long, but you could get away with skimming them as he always goes over them in class.
