I LOVED this class so much. I took this fall 2020 asynchronously. This class focuses on the impact and role of translation. We met only on Wednesdays; attendance was not required since they were just discussion but she does want you to watch the recorded discussion if you choose not to attend. Every week deals with a new unit. There's about 2-3 readings or a movie to watch each week, with one pre-recorded lecture as well. There's typically 3-4 discussion questions to answer based on the readings and lectures. They're due Friday, but she gives you until the end of the course (half a semester) to finish them. She is slow at grading the questions, but if you don't get 5/5 on them, she lets you go back and fix them. Other than that, there's a final paper where you can choose to write about any work of translation (either talked about or not within the class). Very easy to get an A and it's clear that she understands this class isn't a priority to many so she tries to make it as easy as possible but still ensuring that you've learned something. #tCF2020
Professor Mikkelson is PHENOMENAL. She is hands-down the kindest, most understanding and accommodating professor I have had at UVA. The class isn't at all stressful, and it's pretty easy; however, you'll still come away feeling like you've learned something. An A is attainable with moderate effort; if you want an A+, you can definitely get that, too (just do the extra credit). If you can, meet with Professor Mikkelson outside of class — she is a joy to speak to. Would absolutely recommend taking this class — or any other — with her.
Mikkelson's course was both extremely interesting and extremely easy, a great combo. The only work for the course was about an article worth of reading for each class, which was never checked, a journal of 12 entries and a final project. Overall, this may be the easiest engagement course at the University. This being said, the material you read is also fascinating at times and you will really think during each class, so you're really getting the best of both worlds. Overall, highly recommend. #tCFfall2021
I LOVED this class. Honestly, I had no idea really what to expect going in, but Professor Mikkelson made the topic so interesting. The work is very, very manageable -- you just have some short (and I mean SHORT for the most part) readings, a few journals, and you even watch a couple of movies during the quarter as well. Professor Mikkelson is genuinely one of the nicest professors I have ever had and you can really tell how passionate she is about the content she teaches. Overall, I had a terrific experience in her class.
Professor Mikkelson does a great job of engaging students while also offering minimal homework outside of class. The reading homework given was super easy and a quick skim through is enough to be prepared for class. Prof Mikkelson is so nice and really cares about her students. She is very informative and makes the class fun by being relatable. The second half of the course is based upon watching popular movies such as "Get Out." This is the best engagements class I have taken so far.
Jane is really cool, energetic and caring, but this is an engagement class so its pretty useless. Some of the concepts of translation are cool but this class quickly becomes last thought as your other classes are much more demanding. There is reading for every class which you should do if you are interested in doing it but you don't have too. Most of class is discussion. You do watch too movies which are cool. You keep a journal about your own experiences with translation and thats good chunk of your grade but its really chill. There is a final essay/project but thats fairly easy. Overall, its another useless engagement but Jane Mikkelson is pretty cool.
