This class was my favorite out of the four Engagements courses I took. The title "How Cities Remember" might not sound very enticing, but the course was very eye-opening to all the ways different cities (ie- Berlin, Charlottesville, Beirut) remember (or don't remember) their pasts and past violent events that occurred. We learned a lot about Charlottesville. The class is a great way to get to learn more about Charlottesville and its statue controversy that's been in the news in the past years. There were generally 2-3 podcasts/readings to listen to per class, and they probably took about an 30 min to an hour each. There were no tests or quizzes (typically for Engagements), but there were three 1000-2000 word papers during the semester. Additionally, we had a final project where we used ArcGis to map historical markers in Charlottesville. This was challenging for some students who had no experience with the software, but I had experience so it wasn't too hard. It's a great way to learn the software, though!
Prof. Kondyli is extremely knowledgeable and has a very neat background in archaeology. Even though class was online this semester, she asked our class to walk through Charlottesville with her. As we walked, she pointed out historical markers and statues and at the end, she bought us ice cream and Paffles (highly recommend)! While my other Engagements were basically flops, this one stood out! I highly recommend Prof. Kondyli and this class. #tCFspring2021
