As far as Engagements go, this is among the more difficult, but don't let that scare you! It was significantly more intellectually stimulating than the other Engagements I've taken, and McMillen is a great guy that if you get to talk to him, you can tell that he wants you to succeed. First half of the quarter had twice-a-week readings and 300 word discussion posts, which varied greatly in interest, some being very dull, and some being very interesting. Just skimming the readings is all you need to write your response. You can also get away without paying much attention in lecture, but it's not a bad idea to listen if you didn't do the readings. What is by far the best part of this class and what separates it from the other Engagements is the final group project, which you work on over the last few weeks of the course. You have to make what's called a StoryMap, but McMillen gives you so much freedom to study what you want, you can truly make it your project. Anything remotely connected to Native American history is fair game for the project, giving plenty of options. Learning the technology for StoryMaps is a lot easier than it sounds, and working as a group takes some pressure off of you (even though he does grade individual contribution to the group final product). Awesome Engagement, great guy, and a not-too-bad class.
