I would not recommend this class at all. Take literally any other engagement class instead of this one. The professor went on and on about this technically being four credits (its two), and he was giving us the equivalent workload. I had more work in this class than in any other class so far at UVA, and this is an engagement! Instead of focusing on the topic of the class, the professor acted like we were all idiots who had never read a scholarly article before. He focused more on how to read and write about these articles than on the content of the class. In class, he called for class participation but usually just ended up lecturing and was sometimes quite patronizing. He was somewhat rude and rarely offered constructive feedback. It was the biggest waste of time. I did not take away anything important from this class. Oh, not to mention, he was incredibly rude about college students not exploring Charlottesville beyond Grounds and the Corner, knowing full well that first years don't really have cars and time to walk all over the city.
this class is by far THE biggest waste of time I have encountered at UVA. This entire quarter, I haven't taken away a single thing about the topic of the course ("Passages of Hope and Survival"), and the professor - despite being extremely strict about grading, paying attention in class (e.g. calls you out in front of the entire class for going on your phone momentarily or going to the bathroom), and how he wants his assignments submitted - somehow also manages to be incredibly vague in his 'lectures'. He jumps from one topic to an entirely unrelated one, while expecting you to follow his line of reasoning and then do work on it, and assigns essays as homework after every. single. class. Also, the essays don't even have prompts, so when he grades you poorly, you don't even know why. Additionally, his 'final project' falls over spring break, and it consists of ~30 pages of reading, 2 essays, and a video reflection - none of which we had time to work on in class. I've never been so frustrated by a professor before, and couldn't recommend this class less. I'm really disappointed because I think I could've learned a lot from this class, but instead it wasted 2.5 hours of in-class time plus at least 6 hours of homework time a week for me. If you're enrolled in this class, SAVE YOURSELF AND GET OUT.
This class has the most unnecessary amount of work I have ever encountered. I have quite literally learned nothing about "passages of hope and survival". The topic the class is on is migration, refuge, and asylum. However, the professor does not teach. All he does is assign countless articles that are confusing and require background knowledge to understand. Then the duration of class is spent doing busy work and listening to him ramble about absolutely nothing. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. You will waste countless hours and learn absolutely nothing. The professor is also extremely unsettling and lowkey rude. I would seriously reconsider taking this course because you will 100% regret it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. THIS CLASS IS THE WORST FRFR TRUST no one likes it (i speak for everyone i promise), the professor is disrespectful and you don't learn anything about "passages of hope and survival" (which i thought would be cool and interesting) but like this guy is weird and its like 700 hours of busy work every week that does nothing productive for your learning experience at all (but the professor thinks his class is beneficial and that he's some godsend its strange vibes) frfr TRUST do not take this class unless you wanna be incredibly annoyed and angry when walking into lecture twice a week
