This was a super interesting course that will really make you think about societal issues. Breakout room discussions were engaging and enjoyable (which was not the case in other zoom classes). Professor Braun is entertaining and wants you to learn. He doesn't want you to worry about your grade; he just wants you to participate and get a lot out of the class. We had some reading before each class, and a few written assignments that were due at the end of the quarter. Start them early, and you will be fine.
The Individual and the Society was by far my favorite class I took my first year at UVA. I found Professor Braun's lectures super informative and engaging, and loved the readings as well (you don't have to do all the readings or even attend every lecture to get a good grade, but I'd recommend it). Definitely a thought provoking class and changed my perspective a LOT. Braun is also super sweet, he clearly cares a lot about his class and his students and wants to make sure everyone is engaged. I loved hearing occasional stories and anecdotes about his very interesting life. The only grades in the class were the domain reflection, five written analyses on articles of your choosing, and two very open-ended essays. Would definitely recommend this class to anyone trying to fulfill their 1530- I personally wished it was longer than 7 weeks.
This is a course that every student should try to take. Professor Braun is extremely engaging and inspiring. The course covers some of the most significant, interesting, and applicable readings I have taken at UVA. Notably, the class is very reading heavy. Professor also provides very insightful and helpful feedback on the strengths of your work, but also areas for improvement.
