Prof Coan really cares about his students! He is knowledgable about the topic. In the course you will learn a lot about psychology, and how science and art intersect. The combination of STEM and arts was really interesting to me. The assignments are very easy, but effective. You will have to do a few journal pages a week, and read readings and write questions about them. But the workload is not bad! The conversations that happen in this class are so great, and I definitely recommend the course!
Professor Coan is one of the best professors I've had here. He's interesting, engaging, and intelligent. The class is basically a neuroscience/psychology course. We had to write two discussion questions before each class based on the readings, which are cartoons he draws himself. We then had to do a reflection after each class, and he gives you the freedom to do whatever you want (song, poems, prose, art, etc.) Don't make it too hard for yourself, and if you do, he's very lenient with his deadlines. All of it was incredibly easy and fun.
Professor Coan is a super knowledgeable person, and perfect for the class "Why We Hold Hands". He's a big researcher in the psychology field, and he brings that insight to the class. He's the type of person that fits your description of a mad scientist. He's incredibly artsy, and he illustrates all of his readings! Show me a professor who does that! This class is like a psychology-based course that has elements of anthropology and sociology.
For this class, if you do the reading response questions and the other assignments, you'll do well. Don't feel pressured to come up with insanely complex response questions. Remember to put thought into your work. As for any engagement, there was no final. It was just a final reflection, basically. For discussions, it's basically a free-flowing conversation where you can just throw in your ideas. The material can sometimes be hard to understand, but stick it with and you'll get it eventually. The class was refreshing. Coan loves this topic and the class is like his baby. #tCF2020
