I recommend this course, or any one with Fredner. I got an A in this course, and I also learned A LOT about language transformation. Professor Fredner is incredibly passionate about teaching, and he gets genuinely excited when new ideas/thoughts are brought up. I think it says a lot that he asks for feedback halfway through the quarter and uses it to shape the course. He is incredibly knowledgeable, and wants students to learn.
Class Structure:
The class structure usually consisted of a recap of the last class/ course themes, small group discussions at your table based on the reading, a full group discussion (not graded), and then a small expansion or explanation of topics. It is very lowkey, and still allows you to learn a lot. It also allows you to get to know students from different disciplines.
Grade/Assignments:
The grade included: ~9 insight posts (short writings you do on the weekly readings), a my data assignment that is designed for you to collect data in your day to day life, a corpus assignment (will be a word you understand after this class), and a final project. In class, you have time to work on the final project with your group and get feedback multiple times. The grade in this class is not something to be overly worried about. The rubrics are very clear, and he is willing to help.
Fredner was cool and a good professor, but this will be the hardest engagement you ever take. There are multiple projects/papers throughout the quarter and you have to do a presentation at the end of the quarter. The class itself is really intellectual with readings and lectures that basically no one understood and provided no useful information for life in general. While the class may sound cool, do not take it. It is not interesting and a lot more work compared to other engagements.
One of my favorite teachers. He was extremely nice and interested in the topic. Definitely a bit more work than the average engagement (but like that just means greater than 0) but it was very much worth it, one of the most interesting classes I've taken in a while and I actually looked forward to it. If the topic interests you at all I'd definitely recommend it.
I took "Language to Data" with Prof. Fredner and enjoyed it. It wasn't my favorite engagement that I've taken but it wasn't bad, I just didn't find myself too interested in the topic. Prof. Fredner was very passionate about this topic and encouraged exploration and questions. He truly wanted to help students learn. We had to read 1-3ish articles before each class and write a blurb about what you liked/disliked, what you learned, any questions you have, and/or any connections you made. The writings are super easy, don't take much time, and are peer graded. Class is mostly spent discussing what we read/learned. I did enjoy the beginning of each class when he would show us news articles that had come out on AI and technology since we last met. There was only one project we had to do that was at the very end of class. It was extremely easy and took maybe an hour or two to complete and he does not grade harshly. #tCFS24
