I truly do not see the point of engagement courses, so if you can, switch to disciplines! However, this engagement class did spark my interest in ethics and philosophical thinking through problems. Mikkelson was a passionate professor, and the grading was super easy, as it was just a final 2 page paper and weekly response. Attendance was mandatory which is not preferred, but I just did other work during the class instead. If you want an easy A engagement, this is perfect! If you want to actually get something OUT of an engagement class, maybe choose something else! #tCFspring2022
I did not enjoy this engagement. I actually loved all of my engagement courses... except this one. It was not too difficult, but I personally did not like the topic.
Grading:
It is an easy A. The grade breakdown is as follows: Attendance = 24% (you can miss one class for full points), reading responses = 30% (at least 8 short writings of 150 words), engagement experience = 10%, and short 2 page essay 36%. If you ask her to read your essay, she will give you exact feedback. Also, she offers extra credit. I didn't need it so I'm not sure about the details, but I believe it was just a 300 word writeup on a film.
The reason I didn't enjoy this course was because of the class environment. It was a long boring lecture with a few overzealous students who answered her questions. Meanwhile, the rest of us listened and waited for it to be over. It did become a useful study hall where I usually studied for other classes or did other work.
Typical engagement course, always my last thought when doing things. Work was pretty easy and the content was ok, just depended on the thought experiment. Like normal, the same few people talked and not many people showed up to class. Readings before every class but you don't have to do them. Final project was creating our own thought experiment which was fairly easy. Mikkelson is really nice and extremely understanding. She really wants students to participate and I felt kinda bad when we wouldn't. She grades easily and is always open to extensions if they are needed.
