Professor Milani was a very good professor, and anyone can see that she has a real passion for the dangers of a single story. I genuinely enjoyed hearing her speak about these topics, but for an engagement class, this class required quite a bit of time. In terms of assignments, you don't have any until the very end, and the final project is 40% of your grade, although you can pick anything to write about. You do have to read three novels, which can be lengthy because the course is only half a semester, and participation is a major component of the course. But, this class really impacted me and I learned a lot. If you want an easy engagement class with basically no work, take another class. If you're eager to learn about Muslim stories and really learn to appreciate Islam, then I highly recommend this course. I will definitely be taking another class with Professor Milani in the future!
I absolutely adore this class and Prof. Milani. Every class is purely a discussion class where she asks about your opinion on the reading, so you have to make sure you're prepared for that. She's very intellectual and so educated on the topic of Muslim women that you feel guilty if you half-ass a response. The readings/videos in this class were very enjoyable as well (Some examples are "Woman at Point Zero" by Nawal El Saadawi and "Persepolis" by Marjane Satrapi). The only readings I didn't like were the poems since most of them were hard to interpret, but that's coming from someone who isn't a big fan of poetry. Don't take this class if you're uncomfortable talking about dehumanization and topics like that. The course focuses on the hardships of Muslim women, the limitations of mobility, and sexism. There isn't much writing involved in this class. There's one assignment due at the beginning of the course and the other two at the end. There's also a final project but you can work with someone on that or by yourself. Overall, a very memorable class to me with an even more memorable professor who definitely cares a lot for her students. #tCF2020
One of the nicest and most knowledgeable professors at UVA. Really loved the class and the discussion aspect. Hardly any work, readings about 5 pages and 2 discussion questions per class for homework. One presentation at the end of class about pretty much whatever you wanted. Highly recommend this class, I was the only one of my friends not complaining about my engagement.
