I loved this class so much. I recommend it to everyone that is looking for a great media studies class. I was never the person to raise my hand in high school, or any large sized college class, but I found myself participating at least once every class. Don't be fooled about the "lab," it's just a time to watch the movie of the week. Yes, you heard me. You watch a movie every Monday and discuss it every Wednesday. Plus, the lab isn't mandatory, so I watched the movies in my bed instead (you can rent most through Amazon Prime for $2. There are three papers and a final. The topics are great, including a shot by shot analysis and a research paper on a director. The final was trickier, but he gives you a good review for the last class to have you prepared. Jack Hamilton is SO SMART and I want to take another class of his. Seriously take it. I found a new love for film!
Jack Hamilton was one of my absolute favorite MDST professors that I've ever taken a class with. He is a passionate, funny, and helpful individual that really just wants people to understand that silent cinema isn't lacking. The screenings aren't mandatory, but I've found that if you don't go, it is hard to keep yourself accountable for watching the content. Also, it gets him to see your face and that is always beneficial in a subjective class. Do the readings before class, raise your hand and answer questions, and watch the movies. He lays out the test format very simply and it is pretty straightforward, though occasionally difficult to match up the readings to the quote. He is incredibly willing to help and you'll watch some great films that have helped me in later classes. If you're thinking about taking it, do so!
