Easy class with a chill professor! Loncke would change deadlines and host exam review sessions if students asked. Most days he’d also end class early. The textbook was free but we were never assigned anything to read. Powerpoint slides were available on Canvas but sometimes a few slides were added or deleted and weren’t exactly the same as during lecture. If you’re sick and can’t go to class he’ll give you a recorded version of the day’s lecture with participation questions via Canvas. There are three exams, which are all multiple choice. If you do well on the practice tests and understand what he covers in the review sessions, you’ll be good on the tests. You have 5 labs each week at the start of the semester and complete a quiz afterwards (the labs are like 5 minutes long and the quizzes are short). There’s also a group project where you make a 5 minute informational video, which takes some time but isn’t too hard if you start early and everyone does their part. The content gets easier near the end of the semester, but overall the class is pretty easy.
This class is super easy and Professor Loncke is so sweet. I also took his Psycholinguistics and Communication course in the Fall, and I will say that I did enjoy that one a little bit better. This course is similar in structure, but the group work is definitely a bit forced. Professor Loncke also had a co-instructor this semester (I'm assuming it was the first time they tried this because it was kind of a hot mess). The other Professor was in charge of this weird coding thing that really had nothing to do with the rest of the course and had no impact on our grade. It was just a weird few weeks. The rest of the course is fairly simple, a group project, a midterm, an online assignment, and a final. I ended up with an A and never really paid attention.
This class is really easy and mostly revolves around group projects. If you do really well on the projects, you will be guaranteed an A! Also most of the notes are online and I would highly recommend just going off of the slides he provides. Definitely take this class since it's an easy way to fulfill the linguistic requirement of cog sci.
