I think Professor Volny has been doing a great job as a professor. He is very dedicated to his students, it seems he makes time outside of his office hours to meet with students. He's also a very enthusiastic lecturer, you can tell that he enjoys biology and thinks it's interesting, and this makes it interesting and engaging to sit in his lecture. He also seems rather laid-back and chill, relatable. This isn't really a stressful class to be in. Though, I think it's important to listen to what he actually says; he'll add lots of details which may or may not be important, that expand on what's written on his slides. The lectures consist of slides and videos; the slides kind of get to the gist of the chapter of the textbook, the videos are pretty variable... He usually has at least one or two videos per lecture, that are pretty interesting or whack. This definitely helps to keep the lecture engaging but I think it's implied that we should be reading about the material outside of class. It's true, sometimes he seems a little off, but I think it's because he puts a lot of hours into the lectures, exams, and meeting with students, and doesn't sleep a lot. However, he still has a positive attitude, and teaches, even when he seems sleep deprived, which is respectable and admirable. I think of this guy when I feel like I'm getting tired while studying or doing homework! Out of the lectures I've been in, this is definitely one of the better ones.
Volny is a new professor this semester. He is a really nice guy but is not the best teacher since he is new to it. His tests are hard. The average test grade for the first two tests are a 75. I think that he is in the learning stages of being a professor so eventually he will improve but for right now it is just about getting through the class. #tcf2016
Volney's teaching style is very different from Kittlesen. His exams are less about memorization, and more about applying knowledge and reading data. His clicker questions in class are pretty similar to the test questions, and sometimes he includes questions about videos he shows during class. To do well you have to read the text and go to class. Also, the lab portion of the exam is insanely difficult (you have to be able to recall scientific names and other tiny details of things done in lab). #tcf2016
Although Volny is a new professor, his lectures are really engaging. He adds interesting studies outside the textbook and he explains everything you need to know for the exam in class. If you take notes on the readings and attend the lecture, it is easy to do well. He is really approachable and honest, which sets him apart from the other professors of the department. The lab section is more fun and straightforward than in BIOL 2100, although the lab section in the exams is more challenging than the lecture content. Overall, this class is fairly manageable.
