The material is interesting but lectures are pretty dull. There is quiz every Friday so you have to go to Friday morning classes. The quizzes are easy . I got a 100% on pretty much every quiz BUT the tests are impossible. I went to the review sessions and studied a lot for both of them (there are only 2) and got around a 70% on each quiz and the highest grade anyone got on the test was a 90% ( there was no curve). The weekly quizzes are, therefore, essential for your grade. Don't take this class if you are looking for an easy science credit. The grade-distribution says it all. I would not recommend this class unless you are looking to devote either a lot of time to your 1000-level bio class or you have a real passion for behavioral neurobiology.
LOOK AT THE GPA DISTRIBUTION PEOPLE DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS AND THIS IS COMING FROM SOMEONE WHO GOT AN A. Seriously this class was so horrible/depressing I could barely take it anymore by the end. It is NOT interesting, it is NOT easy, and it is NOT taught by even a remotely decent professor. Mellon was terrible, rude, and boring as anything. The quiz grading was incredibly arbitrary (sometimes I would think I crushed it and write a whole page knowing everything and get a 5/10 and other times not know what I'm talking about and still get a 10/10). Also those seemed to be the only two scores you could get on a quiz even if you had everything right but left out one important word. The amount of time I put into outlining the chapters and learning this material for this 1080 BIO COURSE was absolutely insane. Seriously do not take under any circumstance it doesn't matter what your interests are you will regret this. ALSO, just to give you some insight into the content, you basically just learn random garbage about how bugs fly and how crayfish get away from predators. DO YOU REALLY WANT TO SUFFER THROUGH THIS CLASS TO ONLY LEAVE WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF HOW A FLY REMEMBERS WHERE SUGAR WATER IS I THINK TF NOT.
I don't know what the person about me is talking about. This is by far the most boring class I have ever taken at UVA. The material itself is interesting, but the lectures were incredibly boring and dull. I only attended lectures on days we had quizzes and never even looked at Professor Mellon's PowerPoints. I just read the textbook right before the quizzes and midterms and I got an A+ in the class.
