Professor Tidey is great. The class is very interesting but definitely expect to get hit with a dose of reality and like the other comment says, prepare for dsiliusion. At the top of the syllabus is the quote “the road to hell is paved with good intentions” which pretty much sums up a lot of what we learn in the class (although not everyone always has good intentions). I will say the readings are pretty dense and long but she does a good job at explaining them. I liked this class. There is also an ongoing group project which is an interesting component to the class.
Great class, very informative and engaging. Professor Tidey does a wonderful job of explaining the readings, which are usually quite interesting. She is always open, approachable and eager to work with students. This class always left me thinking and interested to learn more, and I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in global studies, anthropology or NGO/nonprofit/humanitarian organizations. Expect to become disillusioned but enlightened in many aspects of modern-day development and humanitarian efforts.
Overall, love the class. Professor Tidey is awesome at teaching and is great at helping students understand the forms of humanitarianism from different angles-good and bad. Overall, the course structure was good. I like the idea of having groups and working with them from time to time, helps us stay enegaged and is fun. Class consists of group presentation, quizzes, and a few essay take home exams. Take advantage of the extra credit opportunities. Take the class its really interesting and has great discussions.
