This is an easy course and can be taken by non-nursing students! Frankly, a limited knowledge of nursing, medicine, bio is necessary. For example, I am a Batten and Politics Dept. student. The coursework is VERY manageable. Your grade consists of 10 two-page response papers (SAR papers), an in-class debate, an easy midterm (multiple choice, fill in the blank, short essay), and a final project. The final project used to be a paper but Prof. Mayes changed it to a project this year because of AI concerns. This year the final project was to produce materials for a hypothetical lecture on a topic that you think you should be added to the class. My final project consisted of a two-page write up and a 15-slide powerpoint. Professor Mayes is a great professor, as he is extremely kind and flexible. Highly recommend to anyone looking for an easy A, plus the course content is very interesting and applicable even if you aren't a healthcare related major! #tCF23
Great class at UVA. He is an awesome professor and designed a great course that does a thorough high-level survey on the main healthcare issues in the US. He covered topics I have studied before but added such interesting evidence-based research and statistics that helped frame the issues in important ways. The class had weekly homework that consisted of modern articles and videos which required a short written response to be turned in. Other than that there were a few essays and exams but nothing too intense. Would recommend it for any major as it is all good to know if you are living in the US. #tCFF23
This was without a doubt one of the best classes I have taken at UVA. Professor Mayes is an outstanding professor and is incredibly knowledgeable about public health. There are weekly 2-page response papers due before class; one page summarizing the week's readings/videos and one page of analysis and critiques. Being online, Prof. Mayes didn't give a midterm, so the class grade was based on the weekly response papers and a 3000 word essay serving as the final. The vast majority of the readings are super interesting and are a good intro into the week's topic. Professor Mayes is more than happy to hang around after class to answer questions or just chat more about public health. If you have any interest in learning more about the US healthcare system, even just for personal benefit, I cannot recommend this class enough. Super doable and definitely worthwhile.
