Professor Mayes is great! He is so knowledgable and passionate about public health and truly wants his class to have an understanding and passion for it also. His lectures are really engaging and interesting. They contain relevant, up to date information and research and focuses on issues effecting the US healthcare landscape currently. He also provides so many opportunities for engagement and interaction and is always happy to chat after class, whether it be about the class material or other topics in public health. Each week you have assigned readings and videos and then have to write a 1 page summary (bullet points) and a 1 page analysis on the materials. I really found that it prepared me for the weeks class so I had some background knowledge and opinions. Super doable and rewarding class, even if you are not pre-med/nursing/GPH/ etc I 100% recommend this class for any student who wants to be informed on the current landscape of American healthcare.
Best class I took hands down. Grading goes by this: 10% on a group debate on a healthcare topic, 20% on weekly papers called SAC's that are 2 pages single spaced (really not that time-consuming), 30% midterm, and 40% final, though he made it so the midterm could replace the final and vice versa. I ended up taking only the final for 70% so I was obviously scared shitless but he basically told us the topics and prompts for the MC and essay portions and it ended up not being too bad. As a professor, Mayes was really good and was clearly passionate about healthcare, which showed in his lectures. He made the 3 hours go by really fast. 100% recommend this class to anyone interested in the littlest in healthcare.
Mayes is the man. This class rocks, you should take it any chance you get.
The grading is exactly what course forum says, its mostly A's. A big chunk is weekly response papers, which are 2 pages, one summarizing the readings and one reflecting on them. These are pretty much participation. There is a presentation that is 10% of the grade, with clear guidelines and lenient grading. Midterm is not super easy, but very doable. Mayes spent the class before the midterm laying out what would be on it, so a little quizleting and life is good.
I don't know what the final was like, since Mayes allowed you to either count your midterm grade as your final, or vice versa.
Mayes is a skilled lecturer. He mixes in videos and guest speakers frequently, and speaks from life experiences. He gets a little political at times, but who doesn't. Some of the material in this class is deep and very interesting, I enjoyed every lecture and most of the assigned readings (very manageable).
TAKE THIS CLASS
BEST CLASS AT UVA. This is such an important topic and Prof Mayes delivers it in a fun, understandable, comprehensive way. One of the only professors I had where I felt he really cared about delivering information and skills to every single student. So incredibly helpful and nice if you meet with him 1-on-1. This is a relevant class for all majors and years, and he meets you where you're at to incorporate the topic into your interests.
