The theme for this class was "Literary Science Fiction." In short, this is a good class to take if and only if you are truly passionate about creative writing. As a biology major, humanities-related courses have always been my worst nightmare, especially reading and writing. This is also due to the fact that I have really bad ADHD. Given that writing has so many possible directions, it really just throws me off. Looking at Prof. Livingood's grade record, he only gives A and A-, occasionally a few B+ here and there. This was the main reason I decided to take this class as a general education requirement. Grading breakdown: 15% per story draft times two, 30% final story draft, 10% exercises, 15% essay, 10% midterm, 5% attendance/participation. You either write a short story or a novel chapter, most students choose the latter. It must be at least ten pages. You create two separate chapters or stories as your two drafts. Then you revise one of them to for the final story draft. Given that I struggle with writing, I ended up getting 85% on the 60% devoted to the actual story writing, which was the heart of the course. I managed to get SOLID A's on all of the other sections though. But because of my poor writing skills, which caused me to write flat stories, I ended up with a B+ in the course despite my efforts. My effort input was there, but my output writing level just WAS NOT. In short, if writing is not your thing, please take another general education class to fulfill your humanities requirement. Please do not judge the grade record like me. No matter how hard you try, your writing level is only so high.
