This class is really fun, but take it seriously. Your final grade revolves around how well you perform on the tests. Taking the practice tests are optional, but I would not view them as an option. Professor Hoffman is really sweet and wants everybody to do well, and going to her office hours does help quite a bit. This is one of the first classes I had taken for the speech communications and disorders major, and it made me very excited to continue!
I didn't have high expectations for this class because there were no reviews, but if you interested in speech-language pathology - take it. Seriously the sweetest teacher ever. She will not move on until everyone understands and is on the same page. In the beginning there are short prerecorded lectures, one per week, and no homework besides to practice symbols. We practiced transcribing sooooo much that I really just used her video examples before the transcription tests and I ended up with like a 99 in the class. This is definitely and different yet fun class. Also, the class time was usually around 30-45 minutes just to practice cause we already watched lectures. One midterm and final but both relatively easy. #tCF2020
Professor Hoffman is so so helpful, and this course is easily my favorite that I've taken at UVA so far! Basically, it consists of going to class and learning the different IPA symbols, reading about them and doing practice in the workbook, and then 6 transcription tests. The transcription tests are worth 30 points for transcription (though the lowest you can get is 10 because each of the 20 sentences is worth 1 point) and 8 points for reading (correcting other people's tests). She also drops your lowest two transcription tests, which takes a lot of the pressure off of each one. A lot of the class periods were devoted to about 45 minutes of learning new symbols/material and half an hour of practice. She doesn't try to trick you on the tests and she posts several resources before hand to help prepare. There is also a midterm and a final, both of which were all multiple choice and not difficult at all. She's so passionate about speech pathology and it was really infectious! This course made me want to become a speech pathologist.
