I took this class to fulfill a requirement, and honestly was not too fond of it after a few weeks. Now, if you have a strong interest in Middle Eastern studies and especially environmental topics, you will probably have a more enjoyable time in the class.
Professor Farmer was honestly a very sweet and understanding person. However, I felt like she hosted discussions in our class like she does for her PhD students. They were very complex and they were mostly poor for her tangents - many of her thought processes were beyond me and she often lost me in class. Very intelligent woman, but I just didn't connect with her as well. Reading was often long and complex, which often was just too boring to read completely.
Now fun factor of the class aside, I got an A in the class. She's an overall lenient grader - but will catch you up on little things in your papers. Ultimately, if you want good grades on your papers, GO TO OFFICE HOURS - and have your ideas planned ahead in advance so you can go ask her about them when you speak with her. She is also always open to looking over drafts to papers , that is always something I'll recommend.
So, in short... Definitely possible to get an A in this class (this is coming from someone who wasn't too passionate about the topic), professor is helpful and understanding enough to guide you through difficult concepts. But, only take it if you have a strong interest in the material of the course
