This class is extremely interesting and I recommend you take this course, regardless of if you are a Kinesiology major or a pre-med student. Real World Application is brought up often within this class. Jake is a great professor and extremely engaging in his lectures and he often talks about his experiences in the world with many of the topics in class.
Notes About Grading:
A lot more time than you would think compared to the average GPA of this class.
Go to Exam review sessions before the tests, he often hints at very key concepts on the test and reiterates on them.
Triple-Check your format of abstracts, it is very easy to lose a lot of free points in this area.
Also, if you participate in a research trial, he adds 5 points (out of 530) on top of your grade at the semester.
#tCFS24
Don't be fooled by all the reviews...this class is not an easy A. The content is really interesting and very applicable- definitely something I will think about in my own life and as a doctor. Also, there's only like 3 readings you actually need to do (opt out of textbook there's a free pdf online). However, the exams are incredibly nitpicky. He will pull obscure lines off of random slides and they'll be worth 2% each. Unless you plan to memorize every single statistic from every single slide do not expect an A on his exams. The study guides are not helpful in preparing...they basically cover every topic from the slides and you're expected to memorize it all anyway. Interesting class but the exams suck.
10/10 recommend this class regardless if you are in Curry or not. Professor Resch comes to lecture every day ready to engage students and teach passionately. He makes a real effort to learn each students' name and engage them. The tests are typical UVa, but there are enough other grades to ease the pain. TAKE THIS COURSE
I took had never heard of this class before a friend told me about after syllabus day. He had enrolled by chance and told me prof. Resch (Jake) was awesome. I was stuck in some horrible classes, so I decided to try this one out. It was a great class and I really enjoyed taking it. I came in with no knowledge of brain past that of high school biology, which caused me to be playing catch up at first, but once I did the class was really interesting. You learn about the positive effects of exercise not only when it comes to staying healthy in the traditional sense, (i.e. diabetes, obesity, etc.) but also in the effects it has on cognition and as a preventative factor for Alzheimer's. The tests are straightforward and as long as you complete the study guides before the tests he gives you will do well. The abstracts are not hard (only two in the semester) and actually taught me a lot about reading and understanding medical studies. Overall was a great class with one of the best professors I have had.
Dr. Resch is a very good professor, I was worried about taking the course because I could find any reviews for him but it turns out he was awesome. He really loves the subject and likes to make dorky jokes which translates to more enjoyable lectures. He is always open to questions and does his best to help you understand. There are 2 midterms and a final, all of which he provides study guides for. You have to complete two abstracts which are not to difficult as long as you follow the template and he also gives you an extra credit opportunity. I highly recommend this to everyone, especially pre-med students that are sick of not learning anything related to actual medicine.
