I completely agree that Prof. Geer was an amazing professor! She is kind and encouraging; her french is easy to understand, and she will use hand gestures or repeat herself to ensure that everyone understands what is going on, even if the class is entirely in French. A large portion of our grade this semester was based upon a podcast that we worked all-year long to develop. I found it relatively easy to get a good grade, considering that we had peer-review sessions for our podcast scripts and were allowed to revise them. The most difficult part of this class would have to be the grammar quizzes, which were often tedious and detailed, though they are open note. I highly encourage doing the practice worksheets Mme Geer hands out on the grammar topic, even though she doesn't check them, because they'll be very similar to the quiz. Mme Geer was a slow grader, so it was a bit frustrating that we never knew where we were at during the semester, but it was nice not to have a midterm and a final only worth 10% of your grade. Overall, you get out of this class how much you are willing to put in. Class-time is usually spent reviewing grammar and discussing supplementary readings to help with our podcast writing, and if you participate fully and remain engaged with the topic, it shows in your grade! Mme Geer was a joy to have, though be warned that she is a fairly tough grader.
This class was great if you want to practice your speaking skills on contemporary topics! Professeure Geer is an amazing admin at UVA and I wish I could take another class with her, but alas, she is pregnant. Maybe next year. Every few days you write an essay, or a "script" if she is still continuing the podcast project. Every week there is a grammar quiz from the textbook, Contrastes. It is very very necessary to learn the grammar in this class and pass these quizzes. They were very difficult. Also, please attend class. Participation is weighted heavily, since it's a lang class, and my class was in the morning so I skipped occasionally. This took a heavy toll on my grade. There is not much homework besides script writing and grammar study.
