FREN 3031

Super laid-back class but also really helped me with my conversational french and grammar. Prof Krueger makes her class interesting and it's very discussion-based (we play a lot of conversation games, etc). The tests are all take-home, although they're still tricky, and there's a few essays but they're fun to write (you get to pick your topic and she grades fairly)

This was the first French class I took at UVA, and I was nervous because of UVA language department's reputation of being extremely difficult. However, this class was a really great experience. Because the classes are so small (under 20 students) you get to know each other and it becomes really fun. On top of that, Madame Krueger is extremely knowledgeable and always available to help her students and schedule a one-on-one meeting. FREN 3031 is a writing-based class for sure, but honestly I ended with an A- and still have no clue what I'm doing grammar and writing wise. I loved this class and will be trying to find other classes to take with Mme Krueger again in the future.

If you're taking FREN 3031, definitely take it with Madame Krueger. Not only does she know so much about proper grammar and French speaking, but she is also funny and laid back - each class typically started off with casual French conversations about how our week has been going. Getting an A is certainly possible, but not easy. 50% of the course grade is through writing essays. The way I got an A in the class was by making sure that I put full effort into these essays - and I mean do NOT hold them off until the last minute. Also, make sure you utilize email and in-person questions for Madame K. to help you out with difficulties in grammar or essays, she is truly wonderful at helping. Definitely take this with her!!

Krueger is a wonderful teacher! Super passionate about the course. She speaks in very understandable French the whole class and is really patient with students. She is very interesting and will bring in outside interests to make the class more fun. I learned so much and improved my writing immensely. We have class discussions each class but they aren't super long and you don't necessarily have to talk each class, but the setting is positive so I was never intimidated about talking. Definitely take this class with her! Very doable class and the expectations are very clear.
