Do not take French unless you absolutely have to fulfill the requirement or have deep previous knowledge of the language. Overall the vast majority of the course is incredibly tedious busywork. You will be spending most of your time typing answers into an online homework portal that provides very little instruction. The class is an absolute time sink and will require a large amount of your time to even get a passing grade. The French Department requires every student to learn and perform under the same exact conditions. Prepare yourself for spending an hour counting down the minutes and late evenings getting frustrated at an outsourced homework system. What I learned from taking both French 2010 and 2020 at UVA could have been self-taught in a "French for Dummies" paperback. I highly discourage any curious language student from taking a course with this department. If you have the ability investigate another foreign language or file for an exemption to avoid the hellish nightmare that is the UVA French Department.
