This class has been such a great class!! Professor Barnes is very engaging, and even though it is an 8 am and I am not a morning person I still found this class extremely interesting. She keeps the work very simple with one mid-term exam and two essays, which is very manageable to do over the year. While the readings do help prepare for class, I mainly attended lecture and that worked enough for me to complete the assignments and do fairly well. I think you could do either: read or go to lecture, and you would be absolutely fine in the class. I would personally recommend attending class because Prof Barnes does explain the readings in a much more understandable way, but if you're good with confusing readings, more power to you! Also completely unrelated to anything about the class but she does bring her dog to class every day!!
Professor Barnes is a great person and an even better teacher. She clearly knows her information when talking about philosophy of health. Work load is a minimum and is an easy adjustment for first years especially. She doesn't use PowerPoint but goes at a pace where you can take notes if you decide to and analyses the material in a way that you understand. The readings are "mandatory" but are not necessary to understand the material unless you want to ace the essays. Discussions are mandatory but are super engaging as long as the TA knows the material well which mine did. The course counts as the SECOND WRITING REQUIREMENT which you can knockout before you even take your ENWR if necessary. Just make sure you get the form filled out.
