Dr. Bointnott was a very kind professor. However, the organization of her course was lacking. The information covered in class was often random and the most obscure disease processes were explained. This left me and my peers unprepared for the typical NCLEX pediatric questions. During class, she would fly through her lecture slides and pronounce to the class specific information that we did not need to know/memorize. However, certain information, like the normal ranges for pediatric laboratory data, is something that we are expected to know for our licensure exam. Although her class prepared me to take the final exam she created, I was not prepared at all for the practice pediatric NCLEX exam.
Professor Boitnott is a joy through and through. She's incredibly sensitive when students share their stories from clinical and incorporates stories from her own life and clinical experiences into the classroom, and it truly makes the content more applicable in exams and in rotation. Her exams are straightforward and come directly from lectures. That being said, the content on it is more so based on what she says during lecture than what's on the slides, so pay attention in class, take notes, and review them when studying. She gives out a good amount of extra credit as well, so capitalize on them as they arise. 10% of your grade is a clinical project (patient education resource). They're very lax about how you complete it so long as you complete it by the deadline. However, it's a hefty project, and if you want to do well, I'd space it out to finish it a month before it's due (you have all semester) so that finals/other classes like REAL II don't interfere. She has iClicker quizzes too in ATI-styled questions, but she often has the class complete them (5 questions give or take) together or she'll just give freebies. There is no textbook for the class other than the ATI book. If you want one, the syllabus extends the Wong's Nursing Care for Infants and Children, but beyond the patient education resource, it won't help very much (and you don't need it for the resource either, they copy the chapter you need to review/reference). All in all, pay attention in class and space out your time for the project, and you're set.
