I am sorry if you have this instructor. Because of this instructor, many students have been turned off from pediatrics all due the professor's obvious bias/subjective nature. There are many instances where the instructor decided to stop being a clinical instructor. He assigned patients to students who were either being discharged or assigned rooms with no patients in them. He didn't come pull medications with students or review the medications to be given with students resulting in a medication administration error to the patient. When the medication administration error happened, the instructor told the student to not tell anyone and not file a BE SAFE report, which is against his license. He then asked another student to tell the doctor about the medication error that occurred, a medication error for a patient that was not there's, that they did not witness. That is innapropiate. John then made the upset student continue to give medications during that day following the med error. When the nursing groups were having trouble connecting with the nursing staff, John said "nurses eat their young and y'all deserve to be eaten." He told one clinical group that they weren't his favorite. He made students who met course objectives and hours to come to clinical to "satisfy required number of Typhon entries" (which is not a real thing based off Boitnott's email). Students therefor spent four hours on clinical prepwork to attend one hour of clinical. He would give students 100s on past clinical days and then would tell students they were failing the clinical 24 hours before the last day, which is not acceptable. He is absolutely bias and the only way to get by this clinical is to somehow be selected as a favorite, which is done randomly at week one, and he doesn't change his pre-conceived stereotypes of his students afterwards. The pediatric professor knew of all these wrong doings, but due to the need of pediatric instructors, no necessary action was taken so this cycle will likely repeat. Please try to get a different instructor if possible if you care about your mental health.

John is one of the best instructors at UVA. Whoever wrote the 12/15/21 review needs a fact check on reality. John keeps it real. He will tell you straight up if you are doing something inadequately or if you can do something better. If you put in the work, you will reap the rewards. His teaching style is unique for UVA in the sense that he has high expectations for you and he has real tips for the experience that will help you in your future clinical practice. He won't lie to you, but if you have thin skin, you will take what he advises you poorly, and that is what I believe the other review has partaken.

John is a really great person. He may have a different teaching style than others, but he will help you actually learn. He brings up a lot of things that you may not think about that often from his past experiences, and I have so much respect for him. A lot of students have heard iffy things about him in the past, but he has changed in an amazing way (if he ever did change in the first place). If you have John as your instructor, you have no need to worry because he's 100% for his students. I can almost guarantee you that almost all of his students liked him.
