Axel is a very approachable professor. His lectures became significantly more focused as the course went on and he refined his style. After finite Markov Chains, however, this course can become difficult very quickly. Some of the problem sets get tough quickly, but I thought that I thoroughly learned the material. Would recommend to math majors (though it is required for the Prob/Stat concentration)
First, course structure. Sort of weekly homeworks (he pushed a few back), weekly quizzes that lasted for four weeks, a midterm and a final. The book isn't great and there are no solutions for the book so if you don't get a problem, you're kind of screwed. At the end of the semester, Axel did start to write solutions for the homework, but is was kind of too little too late. The midterm wasn't bad but the final was brutal. That being said, Axel gives the most effort points of any professor I've seen. If you put anything for a problem you'll get 60%-70% on it, and if you put something even resembling the write answer, you'll get full credit.
Pros:
Axel is a great, interactive, and approachable professor. This was his first semester teaching so there were some speed bumps, but I think as he gets his bearings, he will be excellent.
The material is pretty interesting. If you have a remote interest in probability that this class will be pretty cool.
Grading is pretty lenient.
Cons:
Axel seems pretty in demand in the math world so there were three occasions where he left for conferences and we had subs. It was a little weird having so many teaching styles.
Homework can be challenging and there aren't any book solutions
Material can get pretty dense.
In summary, if your prob/stat, you gotta take it but I'd take it with Axel and then you won't have to worry too much. Otherwise, it's still a decent math elective.
