Great class. There's no textbook. All you need to do is attend class, pay close attention and take really good notes for 2.5 hours a week, and the tests will be a piece of cake. Professor Shugart tells good stories and is very approachable outside class. The lab is easy and fun (lots of walking in the woods!). I highly recommend this class. (If you liked EVSC 2220 with Bob Swap, you'll like this.)
Professor Shugart is very knowledgable and interesting. He does a great job of being engaging as he gives his lectures. However, since there are no readings and mostly of his slides are pictures/diagrams, coming to lectures is crucial. But his tests are all pretty fair. In addition, the lab is pretty straight forward, and while the write ups are a little long, they're graded pretty easily. And there's three non-cumulative tests (w/o a cumulative final) which is also really nice. I would definitely recommend this class, one of my favorite upper level envi sci classes at UVa.
Hank is a great lecturer (probably one of the best on grounds). This class is wonderful is forests are your thing. There will be 3 exams and the required lab, each counting 25% of your grade. The lab is ok but make sure you get a TA that is efficient and doesn't waste your time if you want to get out early. Make sure to read the posted articles Hank posts, since he likes to ask questions on the exams.
