This is by no means an easy A! There was a lot of content covered each lecture. You are likely to get lost if you don't understand a concept because each lecture builds on the previous one. You have to put in the work to study, rewatch his lectures, and go to office hours if needed.
However, this is by far one of the most rewarding classes at UVA! Grise is an extremely engaging lecturer. His presentations and explanations are extremely clear. You can tell that he is genuinely passionate about the weather, and his enthusiasm is infectious. As someone who had very little interest in Atmosphere and Weather, I looked forward to his lectures everyday because of how fun they were!
I actually really enjoyed this course. The textbook is optional and you really don't need it because all test content is covered in lecture. Your grade is based on 3 exams (no cumulative final), 3 problem sets, and some PollEv/challenge questions. Prof. Grise is an engaging lecturer, always open to questions, and you can tell he's really passionate about the topic. There is some basic algebra/math involved for certain topics but its not too hard if you pay attention.
I can't recommend this course or this professor enough, even for those who aren't envisci majors. The class consists of 3 tests worth 75% of your grade (no cumulative final), 3 problem sets worth 15%, and a number of 5 question quizzes worth 10% of your grade (he drops the lowest). Also, there's an extra credit forecasting competition at the end of the semester that awards a ton of points (think increasing your final grade by 1/3 of a letter grade).
My class was Tuesday/Thursday mornings, and he graciously gave us a 5 minute break halfway through the lecture, which made staying awake in early mornings a lot easier. There's a book for the class, but I didn't even open it all semester. Tests are straight from lectures. I don't know how I would've fared not going to lecture because I enjoyed going. Grise makes it that enjoyable. He also is great at engaging students and making sure that everyone understands the material, eager to answer questions both in lecture and office hours. I was so impressed by Grise that I decided to take another class with him next semester.
Tl;dr Grise is the man, tests comprise 75% of your grade, book isn't necessary, lectures are. Do yourself a favor, take this class with Grise
