This class has an interesting dynamic. It’s obviously one of the easy A classes pushed by the athletic department because around 75% of the class were athletes. This isn’t a bad thing though, a decent number of athletes actually contributed heavily to the class while the others were just there because they needed to be. It’s basically those athletes and then the people involved in the MLP (Men’s Leadership Project) who are apprently required to take the course. Professor Sheras is a great person, very easy to talk to. I just wish he would make this class more serious if he expects people to take it seriously (I’m not even sure he takes it 100% seriously). Basically there is no reason at all to read any of the books he assigns except for the one you’ll do your project on. If you put in 30 minutes of work per week to this class and can put up with the narratives being pushed in class you can get an A. I don’t disagree with toxic masculinity as a concept but there was definitely some distortion to make it seem like a bigger problem than it really was. Just go to class, pay attention, do the minimal work, and you’ll have an A. You also need to participate in a mentoring program (ACE for athletes, Big Siblings at Madison House, or MLP if you’re a guy) so be ready to put in some time outside of class. And please actually do it with heart, don’t play with a kid’s emotions who thinks you’re there for him if you aren’t planning on putting in 100%.
I got an A- when should have gotten a B+. He bumped my grade up. You seriously do not have to buy any of the books for class. If you want to just buy one of the books because he makes you do a group presentation on one of the books you choose to do a presentation on but again you and your group can split up chapters. The grade consist of journal entries about your field experience (e.g volunteering in a local school), attendance in lecture, the final presentation, and 5-6 page paper about your volunteering experience. As long as you do all your work and attend lecture you should definitely be able to get an A. Very cool thing was that everyone in the class got to go to a dinner at Hamilton's downtown on the last day of class.
