Professor Horton is amazing. If you like a class with a lot of structure, he's not for you, but to me, he was great. Maybe not the most organized, but he's very knowledgeable and passionate about computer science. I came into this semester thinking that I'd never major in CS, but Prof. Horton converted me. I learned a lot in the class and had fun while doing it. It's mostly coding, and the reading is only necessary if you need it. Would highly recommend.
Horton is the man: very easy-going but also knowledgeable in programming. I went in with no experience and left feeling confident about programming and found the subject much more interesting than I thought going in. This was the first semester it was offered, so it was very disorganized at times, but overall taught the same material as the other CS classes plus some Matlab, which is used in non-CS majors (MAE and BME). I felt it was an easy A (45% of the grade was HW!); take it.
Horton is awesome! It's so refreshing to having a professor like him who genuinely teaches to the class at a level everyone is comfortable at. i came in this class not liking CS and still don't like it, but the course itself was a sweet experience that engineers have to take no matter what. Having Horton as the prof really made this course and I highly recommend it if just for him. Professors like Leung or those in other huge courses often have a teaching style that goes over the heads of tons of the students, and we have to end up learning everything through homework anyhow. That's not the case with 1113 at all- I felt like I actually learned by showing up the class, which is honestly so refreshing in college. HIGHLY recommended, if if you find out that you don't like CS at all like me, lol! (I still ended up with an A)
