First of all, if you have prof. Epstein, don't waste your money on the textbook. I read the chapters for the first exam and found out that the exams are COMPLETELY lecture powerpoint based. I didn't open the textbook again and got an A in the class. I also skipped maybe 1/4 of the lectures and did fine just cramming the powerpoints before the exams !
Howie Epstein is a wonderful professor, and really cares about his students. He is so friendly! Coming from the standpoint of a biology major that has taken evo/eco, this course is really easy. The hardest thing I had to do was memorize photosynthetic reactions (throwback to high school biology). I still feel as though I learned more useful information from this course compared to evo/eco however. Anyways, take this course with Howie, because if you don't meet this kind soul I actually feel sorry for you.
Professor Epstein really knows his stuff and is passionate about the topic. He takes time to explain everything to make sure you understand. The study guides for the tests give a very broad overview of everything you need to know, but I definitely recommend going to his extra study sessions before the exams because he often ends up giving you the answers to many of the more difficult questions that appear. Overall, a very nice and informative guy, would recommend.
There is basically no outside work at all, but the tests are rather challenging. You have to memorize the whole study guide, but then you will do fine. By fine I mean a B. This class is by no means an "Easy A" because the grading scale is absurd. 74-83 C, 84-91 B, 92-100 A. He doesn't give letter grades with + or -'s.
Epstein was great! He's real enthusiastic about the material which made it more interesting. There were discussions once a week that you had to read for but those readings were the only weekly assignments. End of the semester was kinda stressful because we had a presentation, paper, and final exam all within the same week or so. Loved him and the class though
Granted I'm majoring in the subject, but I really enjoyed this class. Even in a large lecture Professor Epstein is very personable. He presents the material clearly (even though he's brilliant) and is excited about what he's teaching. Its tough to get an A but easy to get a B. Class based on midterms and finals.
Professor Epstein is a nice guy who presents the material clearly in lecture and is always willing to answer questions. The material at times is deceivingly simple though and some of the questions on his tests can be pretty tricky. He sticks very closely to what he covers in lecture for his tests though and reading the textbook for his class really isn't necessary.
