This was the worst class I have taken at UVA. Not only wasn't it an easy A, the test questions never seemed relevant to the class lecture/book. Dolan has a grandfather type of personality which would be fine if he wasn't teaching the class and wanted you to do well. Everyone failed so badly that he curved the final grade a letter grade and half. Would not recommend this class to anyone.
Professor Dolan is really entertaining and has many fascinating stories. His lectures can sometimes be repetitive, but he knows the subject very well and makes everything understandable. You do not have to read the textbook at all for this class. My only issue with the class is that the tests are extremely difficult because they often cover material that was never discussed. The class is curved a lot (my 79% became an A), but taking the tests is frustrating.
It is easy to tell that Dolan was very prominent in the field..... back in his day. He is way past his prime and spends most of the lecture time reminiscing about past research excursions and trips to beaches. He is such a sweet man, but sadly that does not expand my education. I took this class in hopes of a gpa booster, but the lectures are not helpful for the quizzes, and the reading doesn't help much either. The TA (Amy Grady) has a terrible attitude and is not very willing to help. She makes the quizzes, but does not sit in on lecture.......... seems like a weird method to me. I have not learned much, and certainly am not confident on any of the topics. The class is much too vague and unfocused. GOOD LUCK if you have to take this class for your major, and if you don't have to... don't take it.
Depending on what you want out of a gut, be wary before taking this class. This definitely is not a "Free A" as advertised, but it is an "Easy B" if you go to class and review your notes. Very difficult to do very well in this class. Dolan is really nice, and will explain anything if you ask, and his stories are pretty cool!!
Good class if you're curious about East Coast beaches.
This class has all the looks of a gut. Don't go for it. The class probably wouldn't be all that hard if Dolan weren't a horrid professor. He babbles at length about nothing during lecture, and his tests make no sense. He gives multiple choice, but it's not uncommon for none of the answers to make sense, and he doesn't allow questions during tests. Bar none, the worst, most useless class I took at UVA. For a gut, take EVSC120 with Tom Smith (a great professor) or for something a little harder, try Physical Geology with Biggs. Avoid this class like the plague.
