This is by far the easiest class I've ever taken at UVA. While it's true Prof. Howard is pretty boring, it doesn't matter to you doing well in the class. He is incredibly nice and easy to talk to if you ever have any questions, BUT you never will since this class is incredibly straight forward. He basically talks about pictures in PowerPoints for 50 minutes three times a week and then sends out a study guide a week before an exam that has everything you need to look up in the textbook to know for the test. So this class is pretty lopsided in work because you can not do anything for a solid six weeks and catch up in three days of easy reading. Nothing tricky in this course, but it's not the most exciting either. Some topics, like planetary geology, are pretty cool, however. Definitely take this class with Prof. Howard though; you won't regret it.
Very simple environmental science class. Alan was an incredibly boring professor but it's easy to skip almost all the lectures (after February I didn't attend lectures, only tests). He hands out study guides before the tests of which all the answers are out of the book so passing the test is easy if you really study the guide. Ended up with an A- and would definitely recommend if you need an easy class.
Professor Howard is a really nice guy, but he is the dullest, most boring lecturer I have ever encountered. Think the teacher from Ferris Bueller. To be honest, you don't have to go to class at all. You get a study guide before each exam that has everything you would need to know. He might put one or two questions that aren't from the study guide, but that's nothing to kill your grade. I never read, rarely went to class, and I did just fine by learning everything from the study guide.
Howard is not a very good lecturer. He takes everything from the book, same images. It would be better to just read the textbook. His study guides make his tests super simple. You basically dont need to go class, just study the study guide/read the textbook and you'll do great. His syllabus threatens pop quizzes, but there was only one announced pop quiz in the beginning of the semester.
Very straightforward class; lectures follow book chapters with powerpoint slides images. Howard gives several quizzes (some announces, others not) and two midterms and a final. Study guides outline exactly what you need to know -- you can get by going through the book and the study guide right before the exam, but it certainly helps to attend class so it is not the first time you are seeing the material.
Very easy course.
