This is absolutely THE WORST CLASS IVE TAKEN AT UVA. Please do yourself a favor and DO NOT TAKE THIS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. I honestly think this class is way more work than any of my 3 credit classes right now. She makes you buy this useless expensive textbook, which you have to read a chapter of every week. There are then quizzes on these chapters that assume you have now become some expert on the info you read about for the first time ever and do not yet understand. I completely read the chapters AND took notes and still could not get 5/5 questions right on the quizzes. Above textbook readings there are article readings, diagram drawing, presentations, homework assignments, and lab assignments. Somehow she thinks she can assign an 11 page article, have you answer questions, create a diagram, prepare for a presentation, prepare for a debate, create a conservation plan for a fake neighborhood, and diagram out this neighborhood ALL DUE THE SAME DAY. That is a ridiculous amount of work that takes much more than 1 hour, which should be the limit on a 1 credit class's work per week. I find myself hating this class with a burning passion every week when I do the work and haven't even learned anything that will be useful for me as a non-science major. I have never written on Course Forum before but this class truly is unlike anything I've experienced before at UVA and I've hated every second of it.
The course is entirely dependent on the TA you have. I had Amelie. She was nice but her quizzes were hard and the assignments made me feel like I was in 5th grade (make sure you have things to draw with). I definitely put more work into this class than some of my 3 credit classes. In order to succeed in the class/ on the quizzes, don't read the textbook chapters- just look at the bolded vocab words and memorize the definition. The grade in the class is 35% quizzes, 40% assignments, and 10% attendance/participation. It was frustrating to do all of the work for this dumb class and end up with an A- especially because it brought my GPA down.
Such an easy and interesting class. My TA was very approachable and wanted nothing but for us to get an A. My class had 6 total people in it so we each had a lot of hands on activity. The homework is easy and light (whats to be expected from a one credit class). Highly recommend to science or non science majors looking for an easy one credit
First off, Linda Blum doesn’t teach this class, and I never once met her. But I loooved my TA Jessica Flester. She taught the class and she was so chill. I’m not sure if she taught the other sections as well. But I would recommend this class because if the other TA’s are like her then this is a super chill super easy class to knock out one of the arts and sciences requirements.
I legitimately had fun in this class. The majority of class time is devoted to a hands-on "lab" demo, and some of them are pretty hilarious. As an example, we modeled Earth's tectonic plate movement by taking the top cookie off of an oreo and sliding it around on the other half of the oreo. For like 15 minutes. It was amazing. Anyway, there are also weekly reading quizzes which are very easy as long as you do the assigned reading (usually like 10 pages). And the homeworks are very easy as well. Overall this was a fun, low-stress, easy way to take a break from the intensity of most other classes. Would definitely recommend it.
