This class is purely taught by the TA, so the experience is radically different depending on the TA you get, but the readings and the homework are the same. I thought this would be an easy one credit class, but it's not. It's a lot more work than it looks. We had reading quizzes that were somewhat difficult every week and homework assignments that took longer than expected. Overall, would not recommend this class if looking for an easy, work-free A.
If you need one credit for math/science, then take this class! There are 5 point quizzes each week at the beginning of lecture that you will need to skim the weekly readings to do well on, then a brief presentation on the chapter, then a fun "experiment". My only problem with this class is that the homework papers and labs are busy work that takes a ridiculous amount of time.
This class is great because it only meets once a week (since its one credit) and typically lets out early. The only problem I have with it is the homework takes longer and more tedious than it should be and the instructions are not very specific. The quizzes at the beginning of class are definitely nothing to stress over. Linda Blum does not teach the class and you will have a TA.
This course required more reading and homework than I thought was worthwhile for 1 credit. I also didn't like the idea that I was paying money to take a course from a TA whose IQ was probably 40 percentiles lower than mine.
Blair, the TA, was pretty rude and not very smart. She believed she was very clear in her instructions, yet she was actually very ambiguous at times. Outside of the top departments at UVa (e.g. English) the Ph.D. candidates/TAs can be hit or miss. Blair was easily the worst TA I've had so far. Unfortunately, the TA isn't listed in the course description so it will be more difficult to avoid her section.
My TA was Alice and she is great and so cool. She's super nice and wants to give As. Her quizzes weren't hard, you could easily get a 3/5 without reading just using common sense. However, I generally did spend ~30 min a week reading. The most annoying part of the class was homework and short 1-2 page papers, which are just busy work but aren't very hard.
Blaire was a very good TA for this class. The majority of people took this class because they needed one more credit for area requirements, and this is an easy class to do that. No papers, midterm, or final. Grade is made up of weekly 5 question quizzes of which the lowest score gets dropped. Assignments usually take an hour a week and are also very easy.
If you're thinking about taking a 1 credit course, this is not the course to take. Absurd amount of work considering it's a one credit class. Who wants to read about rocks and clouds for 2 hours every week??? Plus there are really impractical, "busy work" assignments that were really a waste of time. The class itself is not hard, but I got screwed out of an A somehow, despite getting 100 on practically every single quiz. Overall an utterly useless class- not even environmental science majors would have any use for this class. Don't recommend.
TERRIBLE TERRIBLE CLASS! DO NOT TAKE THIS 1-CREDIT CLASS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! I am actually appalled at the amount of busy work, reading, and other useless activities that were required in this class, and for a 1credit course! The TA was not very informative nor helpful, the grading for all assignments is very harsh, and so much work was assigned each week, Blum and her TAs wanted us to suffer and seem to forget that students have full schedules and other classes that are worth way more credits and that also assign work. The problem is that you don't even learn anything, the TA doesn't teach you anything, and you are expected to complete assigments on information you have never been exposed to before. Waste of time, waste of class, waste of a credit. Wish I could take it back.
