This is a super chill intro class. I will say, it's not as easy as you'd think to get an A and the other reviews are a bit skewed. You can see from the grade distribution that only about 1/5 of the class gets an A and that's because the exams are pretty long and cover lots of details. Honestly, I think a lot of people cheat in this class because the exams are asynchronous and online. There's just a lot of content to sift through. He isn't the most engaging lecturer so I ended up skipping all the classes and just reviewing the slides on my own. #tCFS25
Professor Smith is very passionate about the material, and it made the class very enjoyable. Although sometimes, he did read off of the power points. The grade is made up of four exams and quizzes (which accounts for 20% of your grade). Each quiz can be taken up to two times, so if you accidentally mess up, you can always retake it and fix your problem. The quizzes are after every lecture and typically stay open until the next class. The quizzes were typically multiple choice and or true or false, in comparison the exams are open-note and usually multiple choice, true or false, and sometimes fill in the blank (e.g. A or B). This class is an easy A, and I would definitely recommend if you want to fulfill your gen ed as well.

I was a stem major in the college and I was a bit frustrated to have to take another science class for the CLAS' science requirement. However, I was very impressed with Prof. Smith's class. He is a very good lecturer, and the four exams and quizzes, 20% of your grade each, were very easy. He recorded his lectures so I only went in for the first week. Use the outlines. Exams are online as well and he typically opens them a couple of days in advance, e.g. on the weekends so you can get them out of the way super early. Highly recommend to take to knock out that annoying science requirement.
Super low commitment, easy A if you put even a bit of work in. Make sure you genuinely understand the concepts, which aren't too difficult, and the tests will be fine. There are a few lecture questions for each class that you can do in the last five minutes just to get it over with, other than those and exams there's no homework. It can be boring but so so worth it for the easy A. Smith's a passionate lecturer and seems like a nice dude. #tCFspring22 #tCFspring2022
This class is so easy. I went to lecture up until the first exam (exams were online & open note) after which I learned it was completely unnecessary. Lecture itself is pretty boring but smith posts lectures online and the slides-- i would just copy notes from the slides into a big google doc per unit and control f on the test. grades are made up of 4 exams worth 20% each and then daily lecture quizzes which total to 20%. Take for an easy A and to fulfill a requirement
Would recommend this class especially for the Chem, Math, Physical Universe requirement. Professor Smith is a slow but decent lecturer who was good at explaining concepts with plenty of examples. The class is based on 4 non-cumulative multiple-choice tests and a fifth category that is lecture quizzes. The quizzes are 5 questions and can be taken twice, so they are very low pressure. If you want an easy A, take this class.
Professor Smith is very nice and good at what he does. He was also very helpful when I had questions or needed additional help. There was no work outside of class besides short quizzes for each lecture and preparing for exams (four non-cumulative exams). If you fill out the given outlines/take notes directly on them you should have everything you need to do very well on the exams, as they were all open note. This course was super interesting to me and not difficult, but others found it to be hard to stay engaged. The lights were always turned off for lectures, so definitely caffeinate before.
This class was interesting. Professor Smith clearly knows a lot about the topic and explains things thoroughly. Class can get really boring at times. A lot of the lecture is simply him reading off of the power point. The power points are posted on Collab and he has recorded lectures, so sometimes it did not even feel like going to class was worth it. That being said, the content is interesting and applicable to a lot of current events.
Took this class to fill a science requirement as someone who doesn't love science and that is exactly what this class is good for. Professor Smith is extremely knowledgable and wants the class to do well. Class is super broad and covers so many topics within environmental science. If you really love environmental science, I would take another class that is more specific. This class is more of a memorize and take the test type of class for non-science majors. Also, DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK. He says in class its optional and we never mentioned it or used it.
I had high hopes for this class, but the reality fell short of my expectations in terms of learning. This class really is just an easy A, so if that is what you're looking for, EVSC 1010 is perfect! After finishing the course, I really cannot tell you what I learned. Thomas Smith put me to sleep with the lights turned low, and I would just wait for the class to be over. Attendance isn't mandatory, and the grade is super easy to maintain. There are four exams, which are all online through Collab. His quizzes are after every lecture (also online), and they can be retaken multiple times until you get 100. Each exam is worth 20% of the grade, and then all of the quizzes combined makes up the last 20%. Personally, I would recommend you to not waste your time on a class like this, and take a course like EVSC 1450 (Deborah Lawrence's Climate Change course) or something that isn't so broad. #tCFfall2021
