Prof Flaherty is lovely, and seems to genuinely care about his students. The course has a reasonable amount of reading (around 100-150 pages per week), and is made up of a mix of primary and secondary sources. There's no midterm, so it's based on two 1200-1300 word essays, a 10 page research paper and a final (which was pretty generously graded).
I do not recommend this course with Flaherty. I took the course because I thought it would be interesting and I would enjoy it. Flaherty assigns an ungodly amount of extremely dry and boring reading. His lectures seemed disorganized and there was never a class that I didn't struggle to stay awake. Furthermore, he is strict about not using laptops or phones in class. He also took 4-5 weeks to grade our papers. What I will say is that he graded the papers and final pretty generously. I never read any of the 7 books he assigned, wrote all of the papers the night before, and still somehow got a B in the class. With that being said, I would not recommend this class with him.
