This course was titled "Muslim Societies in African History" and was the Professor's first time teaching it at UVA. I absolutely enjoyed this class and learned a lot. We first start by learning about the origins of Islam and then dive into Islam's spread to Africa. We then move around Africa, learning about Islam's impact and Muslim communities in various parts of Africa. The course moves alongside history as the last week is about the modern era in the 21st century. There were readings every week and a discussion reading most weeks. We did discussion posts based on these discussion readings, about 200 words. Most of the class was lecture based but we would discuss those readings, which were often very short, less than 20 pages. We also read two books over the semester and watched a few films in class. There were two quizzes, we were given study guides and these were multiple choice and T/F. There are two exams as well, midterm and final, which were just a few short answers of varying lengths, but all open book. The professor is a very generous grader and understanding. I would definitely take another class with him if given the chance. #tCFF23
