Professor Davis is one of the most likeable professors I've had at UVA. She's not easy, but she is understanding, clear, helpful, and knowledgeable. She's incredibly well-read on her subject and very passionate. She loves to teach and loves her students more than any professor I've had.
That said, I didn't always agree with Professor Davis in this class and I do think she has a much more optimistic view of what people of developed nation can do to help people of developing nations than I do. Even after the class, I'm inclined to think that we are often best off, ethically at least, doing work domestically and sending money abroad or working to fix systems that actively undermine other nations' ability to support themselves. I didn't love the class's theme and message, and I think I would prefer to have taken her women's autobiographies course.
This was my absolute favorite course that I have taken at UVA thus far. Professor Davis is amazing; she is extremely knowledgeable about the topic, caring toward her students, and a dedicated instructor. Her selection of readings helped expose me to so many issues I did not know about and helped give me different perspectives on the issues that I did. Some readings were higher-level theoretical essays and some were much more informal memoir type pieces. I would recommend this course not only to interested feminists but to anybody who wants to be an informed and active global citizen.
