This class was absolutely fantastic! Small enough to feel engaged, but not so small that you feel pressured to to participate constantly. It's primarily a lecture, but there is small group work/discussions about the readings. The readings are really only necessary for the papers you do, and for the three one-page single spaced papers, you can pick when you do them. There are two five-page papers in which you have to reference readings, but you can pick through to find what you need. I stopped doing readings about 2/3 of the way through and was totally fine. Either way totally interesting, especially for pre-health people! Waggoner is super nice and friendly and a good lecturer.
This class surveyed a lot of interesting topics in medical sociology, public health, and medicine. Great, engaging professor who genuinely cared about her subject matter and made the class very enjoyable, especially when she got really into her lectures. You watch a lot of cool films and I learned a lot from class discussions: there were students from different fields, experiences, and backgrounds in this class. I took it with no sociological background and found that it was not too challenging. 2 papers and a take home essay for the midterm and final, all relatively short and graded pretty easily. Reading was also interesting but long at times--doing it will help you in class discussions and make writing the papers easier, but you can be okay without doing it. Definitely recommend to anyone with an interest in medicine, bioethics, or public health.
