I LOVED THIS CLASS. I think this has been my favorite class at UVA. Dr. C is truly awesome and every class was SO fun. She always tries to teach material through fun stories and it makes class very enjoyable and entertaining. The course itself also wasn't too challenging, however, there is a lot of material. There are 4 exams in this class, plus a final open book notebook exam. Weekly homework and a group project. Homework is a notebook on diseases you fill out throughout the year which some weeks can be really time consuming but as long as you do it a few days before you should be totally fine. Additionally, I usually got a little above average on exam 1-3 (which the average was usually low As) and then got a 100 on exam 4 and final exam. It is totally doable! For studying, I would start two days before and be perfectly fine. Not like intro bio in the college where you study for a week straight and barely get a B. Dr. C provides you guided notes at the beginning of the semester that you have for each lecture. If you study from this, you should do well! Also, Dr. C does not want to fail you, she genuinely cares and want you to learn. Also, she gives out extra credit sometimes, so definitely go to class! I think I've learned more in this class than anything this past semester. Dr. C is really an amazing professor. Lastly, I was not a nursing student so I was a little nervous to take this class from the college and I am SO glad I did. Really the best class ever! I can't say more positive things. TAKE IT!!!
Dr. Connelly is the absolute best! This course may seem daunting but if you’re good at memorization you’ll be fine. Since it’s geared toward nursing students the whole course content is about disease causing microbes so prepare to become a germaphobe. Homework includes studying and adding to what I call the “notebook of disease” which is basically your own homemade encyclopedia of disease. There are four exams throughout the semester and a final but the final is open note using the notebook you’d worked on all semester.
LOVE LOVE LOVE. This class is amazing and so healthcare-focused. Honestly, the name should be "infectious diseases" because everything we learn about microbiology is in light of healthcare and diseases. So fun and engaging. Dr. Connelly is amazing and shows she truly cares about us and our learning.
The HW every week is to add something (ex. name, symptoms, etc.) to a notebook that you create with ~85 diseases in it. At first it is hard but like everything gets easy when you have done it a few times.
I am TAing for her spring 2024 and cannot wait, she is the best!
I loved this class! It's heavily lecture based but Dr. Connelly makes it interesting and shares lots of useful nemonic devices. If you are pre-health this is a great class to take because everything we covered was medically significant. The class consists of 4 non-cumulative exams that have straight forward questions(I got anywhere from a 94-100 on them after studying for a day or so for each). There is a notebook on diseases that you complete that can be really annoying to do with a weekly 5 question homework grade, but it's all busy work and I found the material to be interesting so that helped. After getting a B in intro bio through the college, I was really happy with my 97 in this class- I highly recommend it if it fills any sort of requirement or if you want to learn more about diseases and microbe.
The first thing to know about this class is that it should be called disease and immunology, not microbiology. If you took AP Biology in high school, this is nothing like it. This class is taught by the same professor who teaches Anatomy (Dr. Connelly), and she is the most kind person you will ever meet. This class was relatively low stress aside from the four exams which cover a lot of content. If you study really hard, though, you will do well on the exams. The average grades on exams were usually low As. She has fill in the blank notes which make it really easy to follow along during lectures. The final exam is based on a notebook about diseases that you create throughout the semester, so it is pretty much a guaranteed A. The disease notebook is also the only homework you will ever have. You do need to buy the textbook to create your notebook. I finished this class with an A. There are some units you will enjoy more than others, but generally speaking it is somewhat interesting. If you are interested in diseases, you will love this class.
Hands-down the best class ever. Dr. Connelly added so much insight, real-world application, and hilarity to the course that the class hardly seemed like a class but more like a group work with friends. To me, the class was by far easier than my other classes because we were only tested on what was talked about in class or directly in the notes. Nothing about it was unfair, as it was mostly route memorization. Our only homework was to study for the exams (3 worth 15% each, and the last exam worth 20%) and fill out a notebook, which, at first, was time-consuming, but once you got the hang of it, completing it was quicker. The final was also worth 20% and was based on the notebook we worked on throughout the semester (so open-book). The course is required if you are a nursing student, but I recommend this course to anyone interested in the medical field, as it adds a lot of insight into the diseases and thensome applicable to all fields.
One caveat I have is that a lot of people pushed this course at the back of their workload because the information seems easy, but come exam time, they were overwhelmed with the information needed to memorize. Pace yourself in the class, or it might not end well (especially in Exams 3 and 4).
Although this class is fairly challenging, Dr. Connelly makes the content extremely interesting. The class focuses on infectious diseases more than any other aspects of microbiology. The only real homework besides routine studying is a disease notebook that takes several hours each week, but that boosts your quiz grades very easily.
In addition, Dr. Connelly is overall a FANTASTIC professor. She loves teaching so much that she quit her job as a doctor and has passed up opportunities to teach higher levels to stick with the first year nursing students. She truly wants everyone to succeed and will help you with anything you need. Whether or not you're in nursing, I highly recommend this class.
Dr. Connelly is the BEST. She teaches this in such an engaging way, and I truly learned a lot through her methods that some might see as unconventional. Across the homework and lectures, I feel like I learned so much more in this class that I will retain than in any other class I took this semester. Highly recommended, even if you're not in the nursing school!
I'm in the college and took this as an easy A course, thinking it would be a more relaxed version of my science classes. It was easier but I really can't reccomend this class to other college students. The entire course is taught from a "notes" book that has bullets on everything covered in the course and the professor reads from her slides so you can find the missing blanks in the notes. It often felt like I was in high school while in this class. There is also a really annoying homework component in which you fill out a notebook on various diseases. It's incredibly tedious busy work but you have to do it because there are "quizzes" ~weekly that you have to use your notebook for and the final is open book with your notebook. I however found some questions on the final tricky and didn't get a 100, which got me an A- because apparently in the nursing school an A is a 94. So all in all, take it if you want to give it a decent amount of effort but don't underestimate the class despite how easy it is.
Dr. Connelly is an amazing professor. She tries to make the information enjoyable and easy to remember with many different techniques and stories. She teaches out of a summarized notebook that she created based off a few textbooks so students don’t have to read the dense textbook. The tests are very easy if you have read through the lecture notes (I usually don’t stress the tests too much). This was easily one of my favorite classes this semester and I would recommend it, even if you aren’t a nursing student.
I think most of the people in my class did well but I really struggled with this course. The entire lecture is a powerpoint that she reads off and that goes with fill in the blank notes. She tried her best to make the class enjoyable but all the information was dry. It is rote memorization. Her tests are multiple choice with about 3-5 short answer/fill in the blank. It is definitely hard to study for the tests because you pretty much have to learn everything on your own since lecture is just reading off a powerpoint. You have homework called "the notebook" which is basically a book of diseases that you use for the final, which is open notes. Some of the homework in "the notebook" took several hours and there are check up quizzes about every other week to make sure you are keeping up on your homework.
