I took this course with the topic being Asian American Media Cultures. The course itself was unfortunately not as interesting as I had hoped it would be. You cover topics such as Model Minority Myth, Yellow Peril, and other topics prevalent in Asian/Asian American media. Once these topics are discussed once, they basically are all you talk about it for the rest of the semester but applied to different readings or films that you read in class. The films themselves that we're assigned were very interesting and informative, and the readings were pretty long and not that interesting. You have two short writing assignments, both of which you have a lot of creative liberty to write. You also have to do two presentations throughout the first semester, the first being about a specific reading in the syllabus, and the second being a creative project that puts everything you learn in class. She gives you three tokens, which can be exchanged for an extension, rewrite, or a skip. The class is pretty easy all in all, just make sure you go to every class or your grade will suffer. #tCFFall2021
This class was miserable for multiple reasons. First off, Professor Dave is extremely unlikeable and would frequently say very passive aggressive comments to students. Additionally, the class was way too much work for a 3000-level elective. There is a 10 page midterm/research project, 2 group projects, and a 5 page individual reflection on the final project. She also takes points off for no reason, just to avoid giving out 100s. She also was not very clear about communicating expectations for assignments or projects, which added to the overall stress of the class. The class is 50% group work, which was absolutely terrible if you didn't have competent group members who did their work, and the topics were not relevant to the class topic, nor did they further my knowledge of enthusiasm of Asian American Media Cultures. Honestly, I would recommend opting out of the group project and doing it indiviudally. Overall, I would not recommend taking this class to anyone.
