Johnson is really chill and she was genuinely invested in helping us improve our writing. It feels like a lot of work, but it’s really fun (basically just writing and reading stories) and the grading was pretty lenient. We spent the first third of the semester reading published short stories then discussing them in class. Then everyone writes two short stories (8-12 pgs), which the rest of the class reads and gives you feedback on. It’s a great opportunity if you want to improve your writing. I've been writing as a hobby for years, and even though this is an intro class I still learned a lot. Everyone was very supportive and we felt comfortable sharing our writing and ideas with each other. Your grade is based on class participation (15%) (every class had a group discussion that almost everyone participated in, so this isn’t too hard, just speak at least once per class and you’ll be fine), short writing exercises (10%) (write 1 to 3 pages using a technique discussed in class, this is more of a completion grade), short stories (30%), workshop letters (15%) (write a letter to your classmates with feedback on their stories), essay about literary elements (15%), revising one of your stories (10%), and notebook writing (5%). No matter who your professor is, ENCW 2600 a great opportunity to get feedback on your writing, but definitely take it with Johnson if you can!
