This class was fun and helped me grow as a poet quite a bit. If you like to write poetry at all, whether as a hobby or more seriously, you should definitely take this class. Our instructor Hannah was a grad student so she wasn't really experienced, but she was very kind and did provide us with many new ideas and tools to grow in our poetry. I would recommend to anyone trying to take this class to find a more experienced instructor. Also, we didn't receive a lot of information about/practice for the essay assignment, so we were somewhat left to our own devices—although it was a good opportunity to learn how to write about poetry. Otherwise, the workshop sessions were helpful and interesting! We talked about each other's poems, giving praise and constructive criticism. Most weeks we were assigned to read about 4 poems and write 2 discussion questions about them. I wish these weekly discussion questions were explored more in class because it felt like the readings didn't add too much, although we discussed the poems in class. She also gave us readings about poetry itself and how to write it; these readings were quite helpful. Overall, an easy class and very fun if you like writing/reading poetry, but not the most organized.
